If you wish to perform deionization of water, this is done by means of a deionization plant where water is passed over the deionization resin beds and positive and negative ions are neutralised. The process of deionization of water relies on the use of deionization equipment, without which it will not be possible to produce Deionized Water.
When you wish to perform deionization of water, you effectively remove the trace metals present in the raw water. These might include Sodium, Copper, Iron, Calcium, Chloride and Bromide. To deionize water requires less time to produce the finished Deionized Water than to produce Distilled Water, the process of Distillation being longer and more time-consuming. Deionization of water results in a product known as Deionized Water, Demineralized Water, Demin Water, DI Water or DIW. Deionized, Deionize, Deionization, Demineralized, Demineralize and Demineralization can also be spelt with a ‘s’ as in Deionised, Deionise, Deionisation, Demineralised, Demineralise and Demineralisation. All these synonyms refer to essentially the same material.
Deionized Water can meet certain criteria from an internationally recognised Quality Standard. For example, it can be BP (British Pharmacopiea), EP (European Pharmacopiea), USP (United States Pharmacopiea) or JP (Japanese Pharmacopiea). Here, the conductivity of the water will be less than 0.1 microsiemens per centrimetre.

It is possible to pass Deionized Water through a second resin bed to deionize water a second time. This process of a second deionization of water results in water of even higher quality which is known as Double Deionized Water, Double Deionised Water, Double Demineralized Water, Double Demineralised Water, Double Demin Water, Double DI Water or Double DIW. This further process of purification to deionize water will result in water with a conductivity level of less than 0.1 microsiemens per centrimetre.
