Distilled and Deionized Water are both waters of very high purity and in practice they are often interchangeable for certain applications.  As Deionized Water is much less expensive to produce than Distilled Water, Deionized Water is often preferred particularly where large volumes of water are being used.  There are numerous applications for Distilled and Deionized Water and these are outlined further in this section.

The deionization process relies on the use of a deionization plant to produce water of this quality.  Water is passed through resin beds made up of tiny beads of resin which look a little like damp sand.  As the water passes over the resin beds, the positive ions are exchanged by a cationic exchange resin whilst the negative ions are exchanged by an anionic exchange resin.  This process neutralises the ions in the water and Deionized Water is produced.

Distilled and Deionized WaterThe process of distillation requires the use of distillation equipment whereby a vessel containing water  is heated until water vapour appears.  The water vapour is collected in a separate container, cooled, condensed and the resultant liquid is known as Distilled Water.

Both Distilled and Deionized Water are of exceptionally high purity and applications in industry and the laboratory can often use either water.  Industry uses for Distilled and Deionized Water include ‘topping up’ lead-acid type batteries and uses in automotive cooling systems.  Laboratory uses for Distilled and Deionized Water include many analytical experiments and processes where water quality is of paramount importance.  Where there is any doubt whether you should be using Distilled or Deionized Water, it is always worth checking with your specialist water supplier to confirm the quality of water you require.  This can save a great deal of time and money in the long run.

It is possible to further process Distilled and Deionized Water in one further step whereby Distilled Water is used in the distillation process to produce Double Distilled Water of the utmost purity.  Likewise, Deionized Water can be used in the deionization process to produce Double Deionized Water, again of the utmost purity.  Double Deionized Water is often referred to as Double Demineralized Water or Polished Water.

Synonyms for Deionized Water are Demineralized Water, Demin Water, DI Water or DIW.  The words ‘Deionized’ and ‘Demineralized’ can also be spelt with a ‘s’ as in Deionise, Deionised, Deionisation, Demineralise, Demineralised and Demineralisation, although all names refer to the same product.

It is recommended that you purchase Distilled and Deionized Water from a reputable supplier, perhaps a water specialist or a chemical company specialising in producing high purity water.  It is also worth being aware of Quality Accreditations which will help to guarantee the quality of the products you purchase.  Some Quality Standard  accreditations to look out for are ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and ISO 14000 Environmental Standard.
