If you want to make Deionized Water, you need to have the right deionization equipment.  This will consist of a specially prepared resin bed through which Tap Water is passed.  The ion exchange resins in the resin bed are able to neutralise the positive and negative ions and the resultant liquid is known as Deionized Water.  Deionized Water is also known as Deionised Water (spelt with a letter ‘s’), Demineralized Water, Demineralised Water (spelt with a letter ‘s’), Demin Water, DI Water and DIW.  All these synonyms refer to the same product. There are two types of deionization resin.  Cationic exchange resins exchange the positive ions whilst anionic exchange resins exchange the negative ions.  Ion exchange resins are formed in the shape of very tiny beads of approximately 0.5 mm diameter.  Wet deionization resin looks a little like damp sand and has a ‘grainy’ appearance.  It is insoluble in water, acids and bases.

Make Deionized WaterIf you don’t want to go to the trouble to make Deionized Water, it is possible to buy Deionized Water from a great variety of sources.  However, it is important to buy Deionized Water from a reputable supplier, perhaps with an accreditation to an internationally recognised Quality Standard such as ISO 9001:2000 or ISO 1400 Environmental  Standard.  By purchasing Deionized Water from a specialist water company or an approved chemical company specialising in the production of high purity water, you can be confident of the quality of your Deionized Water.

Many suppliers make Deionized Water in a variety of pack sizes to suit individual customer requirements such as 1 litre, 5 litre, 25 litre and 1,000 litre IBC (Intermediate Bulk Containers), the latter offering particularly good value-for-money for those customers who require large volumes of Deionized Water.

When you make Deionized Water, it is possible to further purify the product by using Deionized Water as a raw material in the deionization process.  This results in a water of an even higher purity which is known as Double Deionized Water, Double Deionised Water, Double Demineralized Water or Double Demineralised Water.  It is also sometimes referred to as Polished Water.  The conductivity level of Double Deionized Water is less than 0.1 microsiemens per centrimetre.

The use of Distilled or Deionized Water is often interchangeable depending on the nature of the application.  Your approved specialist water supplier will be able to give information as to which type of water is best for you – Distilled or Deionized Water.  Because the distillation process is more time-consuming, Distilled Water tends to be significantly more expensive to produce that Deionized Water.  Therefore, if either Distilled or Deionized Water will do the job effectively, many customers prefer to use Deionized Water due to the cost savings.
