Making Deionized Water is relatively simple, given the right equipment. This will consist of a resin bed with ion exchange resins. Water is passed across the ion exchange resins and the positive and negative ions are neutralised to produce Deionized Water. When making Deionized Water, the process is much quicker than that of distillation and for this reason making Deionized Water is a more cost-effective option for many applications.
When making Deionised Water, it is possible to further purify the water produced by a second process of deionization. This results in a water purity that is exceptionally high and this water is known as Double Deionized Water or Double Demineralized Water, Demineralized Water being a synonym for Deionized Water. Deionized Water and Demineralized Water are also commonly spelt with a letter ‘s as in Deionised Water and Demineralised Water. Other synonyms for Deionized Water include Demin Water, DI Water and DIW. They all refer to the same product.
Making Deionized Water can be a more costly alternative to buying in Deionized Water. A specialist water company or chemical company specialising in the manufacture of high purity Deionized Water will very often be able to offer the product at a cheaper price than the cost of producing it oneself. It all depends on the volumes required and the purpose for which it is to be used.
Always look for a reputable supplier such as one with an accreditation to an internationally recognised Quality Management System such as ISO 9001:2000 so that you can buy with confidence. Another consideration might be to look for a supplier who is accredited to ISO 14000 Environmental Standard or equivalent. This will mean that the supplier is working in the best possible way to protect the environment not just for ourselves but for future generations. In these environmentally aware times, a supplier with the necessary ‘green’ credentials is preferred by many customers.
Deionized Water is widely available in 1litre, 5 litre and 25 litre containers but customers with a high volume requirement may prefer to buy IBC’s (1,000 litres) from a reputable supplier. These are Intermediate Bulk Containers and provide a most cost-effective way of purchasing large quantities of Deionized Water. So the next time you are looking to buy Deionized Water, it is worth checking if your Deionized Water supplier is able to offer significant discounts for buying Deionized Water in bulk.
